How to Create FTP Accounts

Here is a step-by-step on how to create additional FTP accounts, these accounts are can be created to provide limited access to a person, perhaps a developer.

This article assumes you are already logged into your cPanel account, if you do not already know how, please review How To Change Your Password as it will teach you how to log in from your client area.

  1. Inside the cPanel, we will click on the FTP Accounts which can be found under the Files heading (see picture below)

  2. Next, we will fill in the details with the login (ex: Susan) which will take with it the @domain.tld so it would be susan@domain.tld for login, remember that only the cPanel username is without a full domain suffix. We will generate a password or type in a strong password for the account as well. (see image below)

  3. The final step is to fill in the Directory, this is the root directory in which this FTP account resides, by default it is in the /home/user, you may wish to limit this for example if you have a developer who is working on your WordPress site only to something like:

    /home/<cPaneluser>/public_html/wp

If that was the folder with your WordPress.
  4. Click Create FTP Account and that’s it, we’re done.
